A friend of ours in America emailed me yesterday; I had asked her if there was anything practical we could do to help those affected by Hurricane Gustav. While New Orleans escaped the worst damage, other parts of Louisiana were very badly damaged. People have lost their lives and their homes. Cindy and her husband Tom do a lot of work for Habitat For Humanity (HFHI) and UMCOR is the United Methodist Committee on Relief. These are Cindy’s words:
…UMCOR itself is one of the best charities around, offering
disaster response help throughout the world. If funds are specified
for a project, they will be used there.

Obviously, at a much later date, volunteer workers will be using
donated materials to rebuild. Habitat for Humanity has a disaster
corps, and the Gulf Coast was the Jimmy Carter Work Project focus in
May 2008. From a look at the website, it appears that HFHI is already
gearing up its presence. One of my husband's very good friends has
set up an operation in Biloxi, MS, and that effort has put scores of
families back into their homes since Hurricane Katrina.

May God's peace be with you. Want to come back to the US and work in
the Gulf?
Cindy and Tom are among many ordinary Christian people who have responded to God’s love by reaching out to people in real need. How can you reach out and help? Have a look at the polls on the left.
Sadly, this is just one of many disasters around the world – Tropical Storm Hanna has just hit Haiti, there are floods in India and so many more.
