d the summer, I’m planning an Alpha course in September that will run through to early December and also include a weekend away in late January/early February 2009. Alpha will be the Breathe Small Groups material for the term, so we’ll run as one group from 7 til 9 pm in the autumn on Sunday evenings. The material will form the basis of the Baptism/Confirmation material as well, ready for the Confirmation Service on March 10th 2009. I know this is a different date to previously announced, but there were complications in getting Bishops and Chairmen’s diaries to agree…… My apologies for any inconvenience caused, but this date is now definite.
The Alpha course will be open to anyone in Year 7 or above, not just those thinking about baptism and/or confirmation. Alpha is a solid introduction to what Christianity is about in real terms, with sessions looking at who Jesus is, what the Bible means and how we respond to it. It is very much designed for people to ask questions and challenge what is being said. It does not automatically lead to baptism/confirmation, so there will be an add-on at the end for those who want to take that step. Oh, and did I mention food? I’m looking into the possibility (if you want to volunteer to make one, great!) of each session starting with pudding; have dinner at home and then come for desert! Venue TBA, but the sessions will be on Sunday evenings.
Finally, a bit of fun. Adrian Plass is a writer who pokes constructive fun at the church, and a recent book of his made me laugh out loud and think as well. “Bacon Sandwiches and Salvation” is an A to Z guide to the church (and life), with a tongue very much in a cheek! Here are a few beauties from it:
Pillar of the church: (1) person who is consistent and reliable in their commitment to the well being of the congregation (2) big thick thing that holds everything up and restricts vision.
Mariolatry: (1) Idolatrous worship of the Virgin Mary (2) Idolatrous worship of Nintendo games
Curate: clergy assistant who learns through his vicar’s mistakes.
Boredom: largely unacknowledged feature of church life. Worth bearing in mind that Jesus left people angry, puzzled, elated, entertained, fed, disgusted and overjoyed but, as far as we know, never bored.
Have a good one!
